Playpark Action Rothamsted Committee
Registered Charity 1179147
Who We Are
PARC was established in July 2018 by a group of Harpenden parents and grandparents. PARC is a registered charity (No. 1179147) which aims to raise money to redesign and replace the town’s flagship playpark, situated in Rothamsted Park.
About the Park and Playground
The playpark is set in the heart of Harpenden’s Rothamsted Park. The park was awarded the Green Flag in 2017/18 and is much loved and well used green space. Works are currently under way to deliver a new Sports Centre and Cultural Centre in the wider park.
The playpark itself was built more than 30 years ago and the equipment is outdated, in very poor condition and near to the end of life.
The current equipment includes both toddler and flat seat swings. A number have now been removed due to their poor condition and safety concerns.
The original helicopter and train climbing frames still stand in the park. The metal work is stripped of paint and they offer limited play.
The toddler slides stand alone and highlights the lack of equipment suitable for the younger age group.
The surfacing is inadequate. The playpark gets incredibly muddy and leaves parts largely out of use in wet weather.
Through extensive consultation with the public and the playpark companies, PARC developed some preliminary designs. These designs were presented to the public to gather more feedback to refine the original brief and insure that we deliver what the community wants.
Harpenden Town Council is due to take ownership of Rothamsted Park in the coming weeks and as a part of their investment in the park, have agreed in principle to contribute £150 000 to the playpark project. PARC has worked closely with Harpenden Town Council through the tender process and the final design has been chosen and approved by Council.
Through the commitment of Harpenden Town Council, The Harpenden Trust, local businesses and individuals alike we have reached our £250 000 fundraising target. The hope it to deliver the new playpark soon after the 2021 school summer holidays commence.
PARC continues to raise funds for the maintenance of the play area and for possible future park improvements. Details on how you can help and how to get in touch are outlined below.
The inscribed paver scheme has now been closed.
We are offering individuals, families, community groups and businesses alike the opportunity to add their personalised paver to the park. Bricks will be installed at the entrance to the playpark and will mark your contribution for many years to come.
